BookCourier Previous Release
(January, 2006)

The main features in this release are support for 4GB flash cards and the ability to download fully indexed Bible files from our web site. You'll also find a number of minor enhancements and bug fixes for both BookCourier and the Transfer Tool.

BookCourier 01.04.01 Changes

  • 4GB Flash Card Support. You can now use 4GB flash cards in BookCourier, giving you twice the storage space BookCourier allowed  in the past.
  • Power Search. Also known as a binary search, Power Search allows you to jump halfway between your current position and the beginning or end of the file. Then, you can jump halfway between the current position and either the beginning/end of the file or your last position, depending on which is closer. This feature is a quick way to zero in on a particular location in a file. Click here to read more about this feature in the BookCourier User Guide.
  • Improved File Navigation Speed. A nice byproduct of the new 4GB flash card support is that the file navigation speed on 2 GB or smaller cards (those cards using FAT16) is much greater than in the past. This means you can keep more files in a single folder before navigation speed begins to suffer.
  • Multiple Navigation Levels for MP3 Files. Now you can navigate through an MP3 file in four different increments instead of one. The new increments are 5 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes, and 10 minutes. Click here to read more about this feature in the BookCourier User Guide.
  • Current Reading Position Maintained After File Transfers. BookCourier now maintains the current file and the current reading position within that file during transfers. As a result, you can disconnect BookCourier after a transfer and press the Play key to resume reading exactly where you were before the transfer.
  • Battery Change Crashes. Several users reported BookCourier crashes after changing the batteries. The new firmware processes the battery change operation in a different way that should result in fewer crashes.
  • No End of File Messages for MP3 Files. If you're listening to MP3 files with the Auto-advance setting On, BookCourier does not announce the end of each file. This change prevents BookCourier from talking over the beginning of the next file.
  • Embedded Transfer Tool User Guide. Now you can access the Transfer Tool User Guide on BookCourier when you request the Talking User Guide (secondary function on the question mark key). When you select the Talking User Guide, you can use a new navigation level called Book to switch back and forth between the BookCourier User Guide and the Transfer Tool User Guide. This new feature means that the Transfer Tool User Guide is updated whenever you download new firmware to BookCourier. You no longer need to manually transfer the latest version of the Transfer Tool User Guide onto BookCourier. Click here to read more about this feature in the BookCourier User Guide.
  • Delete File Error Fixed. Now when you delete the last file in a folder, BookCourier cleans up the hidden files so you won't hear an error message.
  • Go to Page Bug Fixed. This release also fixes a crash that occurred when you requested Go to Page immediately after inserting a flash card.

Transfer Tool 1.5.1.0 Changes

  • BookCourier-Ready Bibles Available for Download from the BookCourier Web Site. Springer Design, Inc. is pleased to offer, free of charge, two translations of the Bible complete with book, chapter, and verse navigation. We are currently offering the King James and World English translations. A new menu option in the Transfer Tool allows you to access a list of the Bibles that are available on our web site. These titles appear in the PC window in the Transfer Tool and you can transfer them to your BookCourier in the same way you would any other file. Click here to read more about this feature in the Transfer Tool User Guide.
  • DAISY File Filter Fixes. The DAISY file filter has improved so that BookCourier can manage pages better. As a result, navigation by heading level and by page is more reliable.
  • New BRF Button. Now you can easily access your Grade 2 Braille files by pressing the BRF button. First, you need to specify a location where the files are stored and then you can quickly get a list of the files. In addition, the Transfer Tool lists these files by title, not by file name, making it much easier to figure out which file you want to transfer. Click here to read more about this feature in the Transfer Tool User Guide.
  • Ability to Bypass the File Title Dialog Box for Multiple File Transfers. We've added a checkbox on the File Title dialog box that allows you to set a destination for all the files in a multiple file transfer operation. As a result, you only need to complete the File Title dialog once for all the files in the transfer. The Transfer Tool uses the same target folder for all the files while providing a customized title for each individual file. You can reset the target folder for every multi-file transfer operation.
  • Partial File Transfers. Now the only time you will see the Advanced File Transfer dialog box is when the file you are transferring does not fit on your flash card. By default, the Transfer Tool will transfer all of the file rather than just a portion of it.
  • File Titles Display in the BookCourier Window. Now the Transfer Tool lists the files on BookCourier by their titles rather than by their file names. This gives you control over the text that appears in the window and makes it much easier to read the folder and file tree. Also, the titles you see in the Transfer Tool will match the file titles you hear on BookCourier. Displaying this list can take the Transfer Tool a bit longer than simply displaying the file names because the software must query each file. To cut down on the time, the Transfer Tool now minimizes the file/folder tree the first time you start the application. You must open each folder to see the contents. The next time you open the Transfer Tool, the application will display the file/folder tree just as you left it.
  • Text Filter Enhancements. We've enhanced the text filter to improve navigation of text files on BookCourier.
  • Bookshare.org File Filter. The Bookshare.org fie filter has also been "tuned up" for better sentence parsing as well as better navigation point placement.
  • Multiple CD Transfer Error Fixed. This release fixes a problem that occurred during the transfer of a DAISY 2.02 audio file when the file components spanned multiple CDs.
  • Generated File Names. As a result of the new 4GB flash card support, we've altered the way the Transfer Tool handles file names. The FAT32 system (on 4GB cards) works better when file names are short. So, the Transfer Tool now automatically generates a short file name for each file you transfer to BookCourier rather than maintaining the original file name. Since the Transfer Tool now displays file titles rather than file names, the new file naming convention should be transparent to you -- unless you use Windows Explorer to view your files. If you bypass the Transfer Tool to move MP3 files onto BookCourier, the original file names will remain, but you may notice a degradation in navigation speed, depending on the length of the file names and the number of files stored in each folder. In a worst case scenario, it can take 2-3 minutes to navigate from one file to the next in the Library. The only remedy for this situation is to reformat the card. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you use the Transfer Tool to transfer all files onto BookCourier. Kurzweil 1000 users can continue to use K1000 to transfer files to BookCourier. We recommend that you store no more than 30 files in each folder.
  • Transfer Rates in FAT32 Systems. You may also notice that the transfer rate for FAT32 systems (4GB cards) is slower than it is for FAT16 systems (2GB or smaller cards). This is related to technical differences in the two environments. Please take this into consideration before switching to a 4GB flash card.
